The profile and history files should have used hyphens
from the beginning. Let's switch to that but continue
to work with the old files if present, as an obsolescent
feature.
* parser.c (open_txr_file): Treat files with .txr-profile
suffix as Lisp.
(load_rcfile): Arguments rearranged. This function now needs
the home directory and the existence test function, but
does not need the profile file name. It tries .txr-profile
first, then .txr-profile.
(repl): Call load_rcfile in the new way. Try two history
files: first .txr-history and then .txr_history. Remember
which one was used so the same one is saved. If neither file
existed at startup, then save new history into .txr-history.
* txr.1: Documented.

When TXR executes a top-level program, such that it will
exit when the last form in that program terminates,
it simulates a load. There is a block named load visible,
and the program can evaluate a (return-from load <expr>).
The value of that <expr> is thrown away, and the
termination status is always unsuccessful.
In this patch, (return-from load <expr>) is made to work
such that the value of <expr> will determine the exit
status, according to the same interpretation that
(exit <expr>) would give to the value.
* sysif.[ch] (exit_wrap): Static function becomes external.
* txr.c (txr_main): In the cases where we execute a file
and return from main, we now call exit_wrap instead.
The termination status is not simply based on whether
the file was successfully read, but takes into account the
load block.
* tests/019/load-ret/{script.tl,bad.tl}: New files.
* tests/019/load-ret/load-ret.tl: New tests.
* txr.1: Documented.

With this change we fix the bug that the debugger commands
yield their Lisp forms rather than evaluating them.
* eval.c (eval_intrinsic): Takes one more argument,
the macro environment. This is passed into env_to_menv
as the root macro environment.
(eval_init): Update registration of eval intrinsic
to have two optional arguments.
* eval.h (eval_intrinsic): Declaration updated.
* parser.c (read_file_common, read_eval_ret_last): Pass
nil argument to new parameter of eval_intrinsic.
(repl): Pass the env parameter as the new menv
parameter of eval_intrinsic, rather than the existing
env parameter. This fixes the command dispatch in
the debugger, since the command table is consists of
symbol macros, and not variables. For instance the
backtrace command bt is a binding of the bt symbol
to the form (sys:print-backtrace), which has to be
substituted for it and executed. When that envrionment
is used as the ordinary environment, bt looks like
a variable whose value is the list (sys:backtrace).
* parser.y (elem, check_parse_time_action): Fix
eval_intrinsic calls.
* txr.c (txr_main): Likewise.
* txr.1: Documented.
* y.tab.c.shipped: Updated.
* stdlib/doc-syms.tl: Updated.

Files loaded from the command line or via the load function
or @(load) directive now have a block named load in scope.
Thus (return-from load <expr>) may be used to abort a
load when it is finished. The load function will then
return the value of <expr>.
* eval.c (load): Bind a load block around the whole thing
and use the captured return value as the function's
return value.
* match.c (v_load): Bind the load block here too. Ensure
that if the block return is taken, the ret variable
contains next_spec_k, so that processing continues with
whatever directive follows the @(load).
* txr.c (txr_main): Bind the block in severl cases that
load code.
* txr.1: Documented.

describe -p as being like -e.
(txr_main): Implement -e using read_objects_from_string,
with progn consed to the front. Don't evaluate if it
returns the error value colon_k.

This fixes only the build. I'm getting a crash in
one test case, namely tests/010/json.tl.
* lib.h (mut): Remove stray semicolon from definition.
This semicolon compensates for the lack of a semicolon
in txr.c, which becomes a syntax errror under no-gen-gc,
when the other definition of mut is active.
(mkloc, setcheck): Let's add casts of the object argument
to void. This gets rid of a number of unused parameter
errors in various functions that take an object parameter
that is only used in the case of generational GC.
* txr.c (txr_main): Add missing semicolon after mut call.
* gc.c (gc_wrap): In the no CONFIG_GEN_GC case, cast
argument full to void, since it is unused.

I noticed that when compiling a TXR Lisp program which
refers to self-path using the --compile option, the
compiler complained about self-path being unbound.
* txr.c (self_path_s): New global variable.
(do_compile_opt): Prior to running compile-update-file,
bind self-path to the source path.
(txr_main): Don't define local self_path_s, but initialize
the global one. Replace redundant re-intering of self-path
with a reference to self_path_s.
* txr.1: self-path documentation updated.

* txr.c (sysroot_init): Use regsub to look for "\\"
substring instead of regex.
* stdlib/getopts.tl (opt-parsed convert-type):
regsub for "0x" substring rather than #/0x/ regex.
* stdlib/pic.tl (pic-join-oipt): regsub for
"~" substring rather than #/\~/ regex.
* stdlib/socket.tl (in6addr-str): regsub for "::"
substring instead of #/::/ regex in two places.
The double regsub there looks like a mistake; will
address in another commit.

* txr.c (sysroot_init): The value of TXR_REL_PATH
already has the exe suffix on it if we are building
for Windows. There is no need to try with EXE_SUFF
tacked on to it. There is also no need to try PROG_NAME
with or without the suffix. EXE_SUFF is the empty
string on non-Windows platforms, so the two lines of
code are equivalent. On Windows, PROG_NAME without
the EXE_SUFF will not match; that maybe_sysroot call
is a waste of CPU cycles.

* Makefile (LN): New variable. On platforms where
you can't hard link, this can be replaced with some
other command. Possibly "true" not to have the alternative
executable name created at all.
(HARDLINK): New macro.
(install): Use HARDLINK to create a link named txrlisp
pointing to the same file as txr in the destination
directory.
* txr.c (txr_main): If the executable ends with "lisp"
(or "lisp.exe" on Windows), then default the txr_lisp_p
variable to t, which has the effect as if --lisp had
been processed.

The --free-all feature is broken. It is needed for confirming
lack of memory leaks during development. What breaks it is the
atexit call to run_load_hooks in eval.c, which occurs after
the atexit call to free_all in txr.c which blows everything
away.
* Makefile (tst/tests/019/load-hook.ok): Let's put --free-all
on this test case, because it has to with the load hooks.
Make no mistake though: everything crashes with --free-all,
not this test case specifically.
* txr.c (opt_free_all): New global variable.
(free_all): Free resources only if opt_free_all is true.
Lose the paranoid called flag.
(main): Register free_all with atexit before callilng init.
This ensures that it will be called after any atexit
handlers registered as part of init, like the one in sysif.c
and eval.c.
(txr_main): The --free-all option now just sets opt_free_all.
* txr.h (opt_free_all): Declared.

* eval.c (load_search_dirs_s): New symbol variable.
(load): Initialize the name variable whose address is passed
as the third argument of open_txr_file, which is now
an in-out parameter. Pass t for the new search_dirs parameter,
so that load benefits from the searching.
(eval_init): Initialize load_search_dirs_s and register the
*load-search-dirs* special variable.
* eval.h (load_search_dirs_s): Declared.
(load_search_dirs): New macro.
* match.c (v_load): Initialize the variable passed as third argument
of open_txr_file.
* parser.c (open_txr_file): Take a new argument, search_dirs.
If this is t, it tells the function "if the path is not found,
then recurse on the *load-search-dirs* variable. Otherwise,
if the value is not t, it is a list of the remaining directories
to try. The existing parameter orig_in_resolved_out must now
point to a location which is initialized. It is assumed to hold
the original target that was passed to the load function.
The first_try_path is a the path to actually try, derived from
that one. Thus, the caller of open_txr_file gets to determine
the initial try path using its own algorithm. Then any recursive
calls that go through *load-search-dirs* will pass a first argument
which is made of the original name, combined with a search dir.
(load_rcfile): Pass pointer to initialized location as third
argument of open-txr_file, and pass a nil value for search_dirs:
no search takes place when looking for that file, which is at a
single, fixed location.
* parser.h (open_txr_file): Declaration updated.
* txr.c (sysroot_init): Initialize *load-search-dirs*.
(txr_main): Ensure third argument in all calls to open_txr_file
points to initialized variable, with the correct value,
and pass t for the search_dirs argument.

*load-hooks* lets a .txr, .tl or .tlo file specify actions to be taken
when the loading of that file completes, whether normally or via
an exception. They are also honored by process exit.
For instance, with this, we can have a Lisp file that behaves like
a script which cleans up after itself (e.g. removing temporary files)
even if it is not run as a stand-alone program, but invoked
via (load ...). Because it's not a stand-alone program, it cannot
simply use the at-exit-call mechanism. The unwind-protect operator could
be used, but it's inconvenient because it protects a single form.
The *load-hooks* feature in effect protects all the top level forms of a
load, similarly to unwind-protect. Also, unwind-protect does not
guard against a process exit. (However, *load-hooks* does not guard
against an abnormal exit, only normal termination).
* eval.c (load_hooks_s): New symbol variable.
(run_load_hooks): New function.
(run_load_hooks_atexit): New static function.
(load): bind *load-hooks* to nil around load. Implement
the hooks processing via run_load_hooks, taking care to pass the
load-time dynamic environment that has already been undone.
(eval_init): Initialize load_hooks_s and register the *load-hooks*
variable. Register run_load_hooks_atexit with atexit, so the
current value of *load-hooks* is processed on process exit.
* eval.h (load_hooks_s, run_load_hooks): Declared.
* match.c (v_load): Similar changes as in load.
* txr.c (txr_main): Run the load hooks with run_load_hooks immediately
after processing the .txr or .tl file, before entering the listener.
* tests/019/load-hook.tl: New directory and file
* tests/load-hook.tl: New file.
* txr.1: Documented.

This patch unbundles the building of the full-featured REPL
from HAVE_TERMIOS. We make it subject to its own configuration
option CONFIG_FULL_REPL, which is 1 by default. This way, the
downstream users or package maintainers can build TXR without
the full-featured REPL even if HAVE_TERMIOS is 1, and the
other termios material is built-in.
* configure (full_repl): New variable.
(help): Include full-repl in the help text.
In the termios test, if we don't detect termios, then
negate the full_repl variable.
In the final config variable generation section, generate
the CONFIG_FULL_REPL 1 define in config.h, if full_repl
is true, ensuring it is subject to HAVE_TERMIOS, too.
* linenoise/linenoise.c: Replace HAVE_TERMIOS with
CONFIG_FULL_REPL.
* linenoise/linenoise.h: Likewise.
* parser.c: Likewise.
* txr.c: Likewise and ...
(if_termios): Macro renamed to if_full_repl.
(if_full_repl): New macro.
(opt_noninteractive): Use if_full_repl macro for
initializing.
(banner): Use if_ful_repl macro instead of if_termios.

This commit fixes the conceptual issue that when there is no termios
support (HAVE_TERMIOS is absent/false), then there is no
listener at all, even though the listener supports plain mode
that doesn't require termios.
* Makefile (linenoise/linenoise.o): Link in unconditionally,
not subject to have_termios.
* linenoise.c: Include termios-related header only if
HAVE_TERMIOS.
(struct lino_state): Define the completion_callback and
orig_termios members only if HAVE_TERMIOS.
(wcnsprintf, atexit_handler, enable_raw_mode,

edit_delete_to_eol, edit_delete_prev_word, edit_delete_line,
tr, char, edit_in_editor, edit, sigwinch_handler): Functions
defined only if HAVE_TERMIOS.
(struct abuf, struct row_values): Struct types defined only if
HAVE_TERMIOS.
(screen_rows): Defined only if HAVE_TERMIOS.
(linenoise): Support only noninteractive read loop unless
HAVE_TERMIOS.
(lino_make): If HAVE_TERMIOS is false, then set the
noninteractive flag, so the linenoise function enters
the plain-mode loop.
(lino_cleanup, lino_hist_add): Add #ifdefs to avoid calling
nonexistent functions when HAVE_TERMIOS is false.
* linenoise/linenoise.h (struct lino_completions,
lino_compl_cb_t): Define these types only if HAVE_TERMIOS.
(lino_set_completion_cb, lino_add_completion): Declare only if
HAVE_TERMIOS.
* parser.c: Include linenoise/linenoise.h unconditionally.
(report_security_problem, load_rcfile, repl_intr,
read_eval_ret_last, get_home_path, repl_warning,
is_balanced_line, hist_save): Now define regardless of
HAVE_TERMIOS.
(repl): Define regardless of HAVE_TERMIOS, but don't set
completion or atom callback if HAVE_TERMIOS is false.
* parser.h (repl): Declare unconditionally, not subject to
HAVE_TERMIOS.
* txr.c (if_termios): New macro.
(opt_noninteractive): Initialize to 1 if HAVE_TERMIOS is false.
(help): Text about entering into listener mode is always
present now, even in a build withou HAVE_TERMIOS.
(banner): Function is always defined. If we don't
HAVE_TERMIOS, then the unused string literal that will
never be printed is replaced by nil.
(hint): Function removed.
(txr_main): Blocks conditional on HAVE_TERMIOS that either
call banner and go to the repl, or else call hint and exit,
are reduced to unconditionally calling banner and going to the
repl. All #if HAVE_TERMIOS blocks are similarly replaced with
just the HAVE_TERMIOS case.

* eval.c (eval_init): Update registrations of lazy-stream-cons
and get-lines with one more optional argument.
* lib.c (simple_lazy_stream_func_nt, lazy_stream_func_nt): New
static functions.
(lazy_stream_cons): Take a new argument, no_throw_close,
defaulting it to nil. When calling close_stream directly, pass
the inverted value of no_throw_close. Choose the new _nt
functions for the lazy list if no_throw_close is true; those
functions pass nil as the second argument of close_stream.
* lib.h (lazy_stream_cons): Declaration updated.
* match.c (v_next_impl, open_data_source, match_fun): Pass
down the nothrow value to lazy_stream_cons, or else nil in
situations when that is not applicable or there is no such
value. Thus the :nothrow feature of v_next will now not only
ensure that there is no exception when opening the stream but
also when closing it. Unusual situations encountered when
the lazy list reads from the stream still throw.
* txr.1: Documented.
|
|
|
|
|
|

* txr.c (banner): If standard input isn't a tty, bail.
Now takes a self argument for the c_int function.

txr is reporting "option --<foo> takes no argument"
for any unknown option <foo>, which is silly.
* txr.c (no_dbg_support): Drop setuid privilege here
before doing the output.
(txr_main): Block that diagnoses "takes no argument"
is now reachable only by goto. Every no-argument option tests
the org variable and branches there if there are arguments.
Some rearrangement of drop_privilege() calls and
insertion of missing ones via it now being called in
no_dbug_support.

A build-id is a string optionally embedded into TXR at build
time which can be displayed with a command line option. It can
help developers who are juggling multiple builds in their
workspace to identify what they are running.
* Makefile (txr.o, txr-win.o): If a build_id has been
defined, then define the TXR_BUILD_ID macro on the command
line when compiling these object files.
* configure (build_id): New variable.
(help) Describe build_id.
(gen_config_make): Generate build_id and build_id_exp make
variables.
* txr.1: Documented --build-id option.
* tsr.c (build_id): Conditionally defined global variable.
(help): Brief help string for --build-id.
(txr_main): Process --build-id option.

txr can process a Lisp file specified on the command line and
then enter into the listener. In order to always enter the
listener, even if the file errors out, the execution of the
file uses read_eval_stream_noerr, which was written for this
purpose. But this causes a problem for error reporting which
is sensitive to whether or not an error handler exists.
(See the compile-error function, and how it uses find-frame.)
* txr.c (txr_main): Because we already know whether we are
going to be entering the listener, we can split the evaluation
of the Lisp file into two cases: if we will be entering the
listener, we evaluate it with ignored error exceptions.
If we won't be entering the listener, we evaluate normally.
With this, I can run "make tests" now and be taken to the
locaton of certain errors, due to the messages appearing on
standard error.

* RELNOTES: Fix typos.
* txr.1: Correct alist-remove and alist-nremove's argument
lists (the keys are variadic). Remove "(the empty string)" from
abs-path-p examples because it formats bizarrely in man output
and is anyway mentioned in the description. Remove spurious
spaces from .mets lines interfering with the formatting. Add some
missing .code and .meta directives. Unitalicize words of Latin
origin that have entered the dictionary ("de facto" and "vice
versa"). Add hyphens to compound words used as adjectives. Remove
hyphen from "non-matching". Move periods inside parentheses
containing full sentences. Add missing words. Remove repeated
words. Fix various other minor issues.
* txr.c (help): Fix a typo. Clarify a description. Add missing
periods. Make some other minor changes.

* txr.c (help): Remove -b help text which pertains to an
ancient -b option that was deprecated in 2014. Add correct
help text for -b.
(txr_main): Use split_str for the argument of -b. If it fails
to produce a two-element list, it means the equal sign is
missing; issue an error message and exit. Thereby we avoid
passing nil as the input source argument of lisp_parse.

The parser maintains some token objects for one parse job to
the next in the tok_pushback and recent_tok arrays. When the
recent_tok is assigned into the parser, it could be a
wrong-way assignment: the parser is a gen 1 object,
yet the token's semantic value of type val is a gen 0.

On platforms where wchar_t literals have two byte alignment,
these misbehave incorrectly, failing to treat / as a path
separator. Thus (dir-name "a/b/c") is reported as ".".
Lack of test coverage, argh.

This partially reverts and reworks commit
c5afb01548c5b6bf4ec83373b5e2e09f14690b01 from May 4, 2018.
I have no idea why I replaced fallback code which does
something quite reasonable: invokes realpath on the value from
argv[0]. The commit comment claims that this breaks when the
program is not invoked with an absolute path, but how can that
be, if realpath is used?
* txr.c (get_self_path): Let's keep TXR_INST_PATH, and return
that in the case that progname_u8 is null, because of a
null argv[0]. Otherwise, let's revert to the original strategy
of calling realpath on progname_u8.

The c_num and c_unum functions now take a self argument for
identifying the calling function. This requires changes in a
large number of places.
In a few places, additional functions acquire a self
argument. The ffi module has the most extensive example of
this.
Some functions mention their name in a larger string, or have
scattered literals giving their name; with the introduction of
the self local variable, these are replaced by references to
self.
In the following changelog, the notation TS stands for "take
self argument", meaning that the functions acquires a new "val
self" argument. The notation DS means "define self": the functions
in question defines a self variable, which they pass down.
The notation PS means that the functions pass down an existing
self variable to functions that now require it.

We get rid of some defaulting and error checks from interning.
This saves a few cycles on startup in the large number of
intern calls that are performed.
* eval.c (eval_init): Wire the intern intrinsic to the new
intern_intrinsic function rather than intern.
* lib.c (intern): Remove package lookup and error check on str
argument.
(intern_intrinsic): New function, which has the package lookup
and error check.
(intern_fallback): Remove package lookup and error check.
* lib.h (intern_intrinsic): Declared.
* txr.c (txr_main): Fix one instance of an intern call that
relies on defaulting of the second argument, by passing
cur_package.

This was broken on April 21, 2019 in commit
2e36e0feae8d1dd75c8410b365d7dc33b30ce66b (April 21, 2019)
which changed parse_once in such a way that the name
being passed down was no longer stored in the parser.
The ensure_parser function being relied upon doesn't take on
the responsibility of propagating the name from the stream
to the parser, so the parser ends up with a nil name.
Let's just smooth this over by having ensure_parser take
a name parameter. If ensure_parser creates a new parser, it
puts in the name. If the name is nil, then it is
taken from the stream.
