The use of -ansi doesn't by itself diagnose instances of some
constructs we don't want in the project, like mixed
declarations and statements.
* configure (diag_flags): Add -Werror=declaration-after-statement.
This is C only, so filter it out for C++.
Also add -Werror=vla.
* HACKING: Update inaccurate statements about what dialect we
are using. TXR isn't pure C90: some GCC extensions are used.
We even use long long if the configure script detects it as
working, and some C99 library features.
* buf.c (replace_buf, buf_list): Fix by reordering.
* eval.c (op_dohash, op_load_time_lit): Fix by reordering.
* ffi.c (ffi_simple_release): Fix by reordering.
(align_sw_get): Fix empty macro to expand to dummy declaration
so a semicolon after it isn't interpreted as a statement.
On platforms with alignment, remove a semicolon from the macro
so that it requires one.
(ffi_i8_put, ffi_u8_put): Fix by reordering.
* gc.c (gc_init): Fix with extra braces.
* hash.c (hash_init): Fix by reordering.
* lib.c (list_collect_revappend, sub_iter, replace_str,
replace_vec, mapcar_listout, mappend, mapdo, window_map_list,
subst): Fix by reordering.
(gensym, find, rfind, pos, rpos, in, search_common): Fix by
renaming optional argument and using declaration instead of
assignment.
* linenoise/linenoise.c (edit_in_editor): Fix by reordering.
* parser.c (is_balanced_line): Fix by reordering.
* regex.c (nfa_count_one, print_rec): Fix by reordering.
* signal.c (sig_mask): Fix by reordering.
* stream.c (get_string): Fix by renaming optional argument and
using declaration instead of assignment.
* struct.c (lookup_static_slot_desc): Fix by turning mutated
variable into block local.
(umethod_args_fun): Fix by reordering.
(get_special_slot): Fix by new scope via braces.
* sysif.c (usleep_wrap): Fix by new scope via braces.
(setrlimit_wrap): Fix by new scope via braces.
* time.c (time_string_meth, time_parse_meth): Fix by reordering.
* tree.c (tr_do_delete_spec): Fix by new scope via braces.
* unwind.h (uw_block_beg): New macro which doesn't define
RESULTVAR but expects it to refers to an existing one.
(uw_block_begin): Replace do while (0) with enum trick
so that we have a declaration that requires a semicolon,
rather than a statement, allowing declarations to follow.
(uw_match_env_begin): Now opens a scope and features the
same enum trick as in uw_block_begin.
This fixes a declaration-follows-statement issue in
the v_output function in match.c.
(uw_match_env_end): Closes scope opened by uw_match_env_begin.
* unwind.c (revive_cont): Fix by introducing variable, and
using new uw_block_beg macro.
* vm.c (vm_execute_closure): Fix using combination of local
variable and reordering.

* signal.c (sig_init): Register ITIMER_PROF as the documented
itimer-prof, not the undocumented itimer-prov. Anyone
depending on this will have to fix their code to use the new
variable, or else (defvarl itimer-prof itimer-prov).
This was discovered due to Paul A. Patience's doc-syms
scrubbing code recently added to genman.txr, which identifies
documented symbols not present in the actual image.

|
|
|
|
|
|
|

* signal.c (sig_handler): Some older compilers cannot figure
out that stack_lim is not used uninitialized, due to the
conditional logic here, in which two separate code blocks are
guarded by the same condition. Let's initialize the variable,
like the others.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
* signal.c (sig_handler): For a is_cpu_exception signal, we
temporarily disable the stack limit. It might be executing on
the sigaltstack buffer, which is almost certainly below the
stack limit.
* tests/012/stack.tl: New test case. We raise a SIGSEGV
and check that in the handler, the stack limit is disabled,
and that we can executed code.

The c_num and c_unum functions now take a self argument for
identifying the calling function. This requires changes in a
large number of places.
In a few places, additional functions acquire a self
argument. The ffi module has the most extensive example of
this.
Some functions mention their name in a larger string, or have
scattered literals giving their name; with the introduction of
the self local variable, these are replaced by references to
self.
In the following changelog, the notation TS stands for "take
self argument", meaning that the functions acquires a new "val
self" argument. The notation DS means "define self": the functions
in question defines a self variable, which they pass down.
The notation PS means that the functions pass down an existing
self variable to functions that now require it.

The alternative stack is shared by SIGSEGV and SIGBUS.
Therefore, we cannot tear it down when disabling either
signal; the other may be using it.

We introduce the function c_time to convert a Lisp integer
to time_t, and num_time to do the reverse conversion.
The FFI type time-t already does this right.
(See registration of time-t in ffi_init_extra_types).
* hash.c (gen_hash_seed): The first value out of time_sec_usec
corresponds to a time_t value. We now convert this to C number
using c_time rather than c_num. Also, while we are touching
this code, the microseconds value can convert directly to
ucnum with c_unum.
* lib.c (time_sec_usec): Use num_time for seconds.
(time_string_local, time_string_utc, time_fields_local,
time_fields_utc, time_struct_local, time_struct_utc): Use c_time.
(make_time_impl, time_parse_utc): Use num_time instead of num.
* signal.h (getitimer_wrap, setitimer_wrap): Convert tv_sec
members of struct timeval using c_time and num_time.
* sysif.c (c_time, num_time): New functions.
(stat_to_struct): Convert st_atime, st_mtime and st_ctime
to Lisp using num_time instead of num.
* sysif.c (c_time, num_time): Declared.

If a signal goes off in the middle of gc that is

On glibc, sigset_t has a ridiculous size: one kilobyte!
The kernel doesn't access most of it in the sigprocmask call.
Yet it blows up the size of our dynamic frames quite a lot.
In this commit, we define a small_sigset_t type and
use that instead. We convert to the bloated one when
calling the library.
* signal.c (sig_blocked_cache): Type changes to small_sigset_t.
(sig_reload_cache): Retrieve signal mask with sigprocmask into a local
variable, then copy a small portion from that to sig_blocked_cache.
(small_sigfillset): New static function.
(set_sig_handler): Local variables of sigset_t changed to small_sigset_t.
(sig_mask): Arguments are pointers to small_sigset_t. Conversion to
sigset_t done around the call to sigprocmask.
* signal.h (copy_sigset): Inline funtion removed.
(small_sigset_t): New struct type.
(extended_jmp_buf): Member blocked changed to small_sigset_t.
(extended_setjmp): Cast expression updated with small_sigset_t *.
(extended_longjmp): Use assignment instead of copy_sigset.
(sig_blocked_cache, sig_mask): Declarations updated.

TXR is moving to custom assembly-language routines.
This is mainly motivated by a very dubious thing done in the
GNU C Library setjmp and longjmp in the name of security.
Evidently, glibc's setjmp "mangles" certain pointer values
which are stored into the jmp_buf buffer. It's been that way
since 2005, evidently. This means that, firstly, all along,
the use of setjmp in gc.c to get registers into a buffer so
they can be scanned has not actually worked properly. More
importantly, this pointer mangling in setjmp and longjmp is
very hostile to a stack copying implementation of delimited
continuations. The reason is that continuations contain
jmp_buf buffers, which get relocated in the process of
capturing and reviving a continuation. Any pointers in a
jmp_buf which point into the captured stack segment have to be
fixed up to point into the relocated location. Mangled
pointers make this difficult, requiring hacks which are
specific to glibc and the machine architecture. We might as
well implement a clean, well-behaved setjmp and longjmp.
* Makefile (jmp.o): New object file.
(dbg/%.o, opt/%.o): New rules for .S prerequisites.
* args.c, arith.c, cadr.c, combi.c, cadr.c, combi.c, debug.c,
eval.c, filter.c, glob.c, hash.c, lib.c, match.c, parser.c,
rand.c, regex.c, signal.c, stream.c, struct.c, sysif.c,
syslog.c, txr.c, unwind.c, utf8.c: Removed <setjmp.h>
include.
* gc.c: Switch to struct jmp and jmp_save, instead
of jmp_buf and setjmp.
* jmp.S: New source file.
* signal.h (struct jmp): New struct type.
(jmp_save, jmp_restore): New function declarations
denoting assembly language routines in jmp.S.
(extended_jmp_buf): Uses struct jmp instead of
setjmp.
(extended_setjmp): Use jmp_save instead of setjmp.
(extended_longjmp): Use jmp_restore instead of
longjmp.

The issue is that sigset_t is 1024 bits wide on Linux, but
there aren't actually that many signals. Valgrind knows this
and so when sigprocmask returns the old signal set, Valgrind
only marks a portion of it as initialized, and not the
entire 1024 bits. When this sigset_t is later passed into
sig_set again, we do a memcmp on all 1024 bits and Valgrind
complains about a use of uninitialized data. Test case:
run valgrind ./txr -i and execute a (throw 'foo) expr.
* signal.c (sig_mask): If we are compiling with Valgrind
support, mark the old signal set defined just before passing
it to sigprocmask, so it has no uninitialized bits.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
* signal.c (kill_wrap): Return boolean indication of success,
with compatibility to previous behavior.
* txr.1: Document return value of kill, and put in
compatibility note.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
* signal.c (raise_wrap): New static function
(sig_init): Register raise intrinsic.
* txr.1: Documented raise.
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
* signal.c (sig_handler): Make sure the interrupt_count
is restored to the value on entry into the handler
if the lambda throws.

This is just amazingly broken; sig_mask recurses instead
of calling sigprocmask.
Also, we need a way to reload the signal mask cache from the
kernel, because the kernel can change the signal mask behind
our back.
* signal.c (sig_reload_cache): New static function.
(sig_handler): Call sig_reload_cache to ensure the
sig_blocked_cache accurately reflects the currently
blocked signal set.
(sig_init): Call sig_reload_cache at init time to
correctly reflect any blocked signals.
(sig_mask): Call sigprocmask instead of recursing. Moreover,
the correct op code is SIG_SETMASK, not SIG_BLOCK.

stack for SIGBUS also, not only for SIGSEGV. On Linux,
when stack growth collides with another memory mapping,
it triggers a SIGBUS not SIGSEGV, which occurs when the
process limit on stack size is exceeded. In either

segmentation fault that occurs when running out of stack space,
and escape by throwing an exception.
Also, bugfix: save and restore the gc enable/disable state. Without
this, if we are ever running cod in a gc disabled state and it jumps
out, gc stays disabled.
* configure: added check for sigaltstack.
* gc.h (gc_enabled): Declaration added for existing variable.
* signal.c (is_cpu_exception): New static function.
(sig_handler): For cpu_exception type signals that pertain
to the execution of some instruction, turn on async_sig_enabled,
so that the signal is not deferred. Otherwise we will just
return without calling the user-defined handler, restart
the instruction and get into a loop. Also, disable gc around
the handler just in case. One issue is that we might be on
an alternate stack, which gc won't like.
(setup_alt_stack, teardown_alt_stack): New static functions.
(set_sig_handler): If we have sigaltstack, and are asked
to set up a SEGV handler, then set it up on the alternate
stack.
* signal.h (extended_jmp_buf): Adding new member, gc.

re-binding. C code now has to go through the dynamic environment lookup
to access things like *random-state*, or *stdout*. As part of this,
I'm moving some intrinsic variable and function initializations out of
eval.c and into their respective modules. Macros are are used to make
global variables look like ordinary C variables. This is very similar
to the errno trick in POSIX threads implementations.
* eval.c (looup_var, lookup_var_l): Restructured to eliminate silly
goto, the cobjp handling is gone.
(reg_fun, reg_var): Internal function becomes external.
reg_var registers a simple cons cell binding now, without any
C pointer tricks to real C global variables.
(c_var_mark): Static function removed.
(c_var_ops): Static struct removed.
(eval_init): Numerous initializations for streams, syslog, rand,
signals and others moved to their respective modules.
The new symbol variables user_package_s, keyword_package_s
and system_package_s are interned here, and the variables are
created in a special way.
* eval.h (reg_var, reg_fun): Declared.
* gc.c (prot1): Added assert that the loc pointer isn't null.
This happened, and blew up during garbage collection.
* lib.c (system_package, keyword_package, user_package): Variables
removed these become macros.
(system_package_var, keyword_package_var, user_package_var): New
global variables.
(system_package_s, keyword_package_s, user_package_s): New
symbol globals.
(get_user_package, get_system_package, get_keyword_package): New
functions.
(obj_init): Protect new variables. Initialization order of modules
tweaked: the modules sig_init, stream_init, and rand_init are moved
after eval_init because they register variables.
* lib.h (keyword_package, system_pckage, user_package): Variables
turned into macros.
(system_package_var, keyword_package_var, user_package_var): Declared.
(system_package_s, keyword_package_s, user_package_s): Declared.
(get_user_package, get_system_package, get_keyword_package): Declared.
* rand.c (struct random_state): Renamed to struct rand_state to
avoid clash with new random_state macro.
(random_state): Global variable removed.
(random_state_s): New symbol global.
(make_state, rand32, make_random_state, random_fixnum, random):
Follow rename of struct random_state.
