In this commit, output variables in the TXR Pattern language and
in TXR Lisp quasiliterals now support separator strings for values
that are strings and buffers. Values which are buffers appear
differently: they are rendered as a sequence of lower case hex
digit pairs. When a string-valued variable specifies a separator,
the separator appears between characters of the string value.
Previously, the separator was ignored. When a buffer-valued
variable specifies a separator. the separator appears between
pairs of digits, not between digits. For instance if ethaddr
is a variable holding #b'08:00:27:79:c7:f5', then the quasiliteral
`@ethaddr` produces "08002779c7f" whereas `@{ethaddr ":"}`
produces "08:00:27:79:c7:f5".
* buf.[ch] (buf_str_sep): New function.
* lib.[ch] (fmt_str_sep): New function.
* eval.c (fmt_cat): If the argument is a string, and a separator
is present, replace the value with the result of calling
fmt_str_sep. If the argument is a buffer, and a separator is
present, use buf_str_sep to convert to a string, otherwise
use tostringp.
* txr.1: Section on Output Variables updated.
* tests/012/readprint.tl: New tests.

The pprint semantics of buffers is that the
raw bytes are dumped into the stream. This is poor.
It was hastily designed based on analogy with
strings, which pprint by just sending their contents
to the stream; but for strings this is justified
because they represent text.
We also fix the semantics of buffer values being
rendered by quasiliteral notation. Currently, the
are treated as sequences, and so they explode into
individual decimal integers.
* buf.c (buf_pprint): Print the bytes as pairs of
lower-case hex digits, with no line breaks.
In 294 compatibility or lower, put out bytes as before.
* eval.c (fmt_cat): When not in 294 compatibility
mode, treat a buffer object via tostringp, which
will render it to hexadecimal via buf_pprintf.
In compatibility mode, treat it as before, which is
as a sequence: the individual values of the buffer
are converted to text, thus decimal values in the
range 0 to 255, catenated using the given separator.
* tests/012/readprint.tl: New tests.
* txr.1: Documented. Also expanding on what pretty printing
means in TXR.

* eval.c (MAP_ALLOCA_LIMIT): New preprocessor symbol.
(map_common): If the number of args is greater than
MAP_ALLOCA_LIMIT, then allocate the array of seq_iter_t
structures from chk_malloc rather than alloca.
In case an exception might be thrown during the execution
of this function, we bind that memory to a buf object.
If we return normally, we call the new function buf_free
to release it. Otherwise we rely on the garbage collector.
* buf.[ch] (buf_free): New function.
* tests/012/seq.tl: Test case which hits this behavior.

This commit does two things. The replace function, implemented
under the hood by four specializations: replace-list, replace-vec,
replace-str and replace-buf, will handle the index-list case
a little differently. This is needed to fix the ability of the
del macro work on place designated by an index list, such as:
(del [sequence '(1 3 5 6)]
which now deletes elements 1, 3, 5 and 6 from the sequence,
and returns a sequence of those items. The underlying
implementation uses replace with an index-list, which is now
capable of deleting items. Previously, replace would stop
processing the index list when the replacement-sequence
corresponding to the index list ran out of items. Now,
when the replacement-sequence runs out of items, the
remaining index-list sequence elements specify items to
be deleted. For instance if str holds "abcdefg" then:
(set [str '(1 3 5)] "xy")
will change str to "axcyeg". Elements 1 and 3 are replaced
by x and y, respectively. Element 5, the letter f, is
deleted, because the replacement "xy" has no element
corresponding to 5.
* lib.c (replace_list, replace_str, replace_vec): Implement
new deleteion semantics for the case when the replacement
sequence runs out of items.
* buf.c (replace_buf): Likewise.
* tests/010/seq.txr: Some new test cases here for
deletion.
* tests/010/seq.expected: Updated.
* txr.1: Documented new semantics of replace, including
a new restriction that if elements are being deleted,
the indices should be monotonically increasing regardless
of the type of the sequence (not only list).
A value of 289 for the -C option documented, which restores
the previous behavior of replace (breaking deletion by
index-list, unfortunately: you don't always get to
simulate an old version of TXR while using new features.)

On platforms with 64 bit pointers, and therefore 64-bit-wide
TXR values, we can use a representation technique which allows
double floating-point values to be unboxed.
Fixnum integers are reduced from 62 bits to 50, and there is
a little more complexity in the run-time type checking and
dispatch which costs extra cycles.
The support is currently off by default; it must be explicitly
enabled with ./configure --nan-boxing.
* lib.h (NUM_MAX, NUM_MIN, NUM_BIT): Define separately for
NaN boxing.
(TAG_FLNUM, TAG_WIDTH, NAN_TAG_BIT, NAN_TAG_MASK, TAG_BIGMASK,
TAG_BIGSHIFT, NAN_FLNUM_DELTA): New preprocessor symbols.
(enum type, type_t): The FLNUM enumeration constant moves
to just after LIT, so that its value is the same as TAG_FLNUM.
(struct flonum): Does not exist under NaN boxing.
(union obj): No fl member under NaN boxing.
(tag, is_ptr): Separately defined for NaN boxing.
(is_flo): New function under NaN boxing.
(tag_ex): New function. It's like tag, but identifies
floating-point values as TAG_FLNUM. The tag function continues
to map them to TAG_PTR, which is wrong under NaN boxing,
but needed in order not to separately write tons of cases in
the arith.c module.
(type): Use tag_ex, so TAG_FLNUM is handled, if it exists.
(auto_str, static_str, litptr, num_fast, chr, c_n, c_u):
Different definition for NaN boxing.
(c_ch, c_f): New function.
(throw_mismatch): Attribute with NORETURN.
(nao): Separate definition for NaN boxing.
* lib.c (seq_kind_tab): Reorder initializer to follow enum
reordering.
(seq_iter_rewind): use c_n and c_ch functions, since type
checking has been done in those cases. The self parameter
is no longer needed.
(iter_more): use c_ch on CHR object.
(equal): Use c_f accessor to get double value rather than
assuming there is a struct flonum representation.
(stringp): Use tag_ex, otherwise a floating-point number
is identified as TAG_PTR.
(diff, isec, isecp): Don't pass removed self parameter
to seq_iter_rewind.
* arith.c (c_unum, c_dbl_num, c_dbl_unum, plus, minus,
signum, gt, lt, ge, le, numeq, logand, logior,
logxor, logxor_old, bit, bitset, tofloat, toint,
width, c_num, c_fixnum): Extract floating-point value
using c_f accessor. Handle CHR type separately from NUM
because the storage representation is no longer identical;
CHR values have a two bit tag over bits where NUM has
ordinary value bits. NUM is tagged at the NaN level with
the upper 14 bits being 0xFFFC. The remaining 50 bits
are the value.
(flo): Construct unboxed float under NaN boxing by taking
image of double as a 64 bit value, and adding the
delta offset, then casting to the val pointer type.
(c_flo): Separate implementation for NaN boxing.
(integerp, numberp): Use tag_ex.
* buf.c (str_buf, buf_int): Separate CHR and NUM cases,
like in numerous arith.c functions.
* chksum.c (sha256_hash, md5_hash): Use c_ch accessor for
CHR value.
* hash.c (equal_hash, eql_hash): Handle CHR separately. Use
c_f accessor for floating-point value.
(eq_hash): Use tag_ex and handle TAG_FLNUM value under NaN
boxing. Handle CHR separately from NUM.
* ffi.c (ffi_float_put, ffi_double_put, carray_uint, carray_int):
Handle CHR and NUM separately.
* stream.c (formatv): Use c_f accessor.
* configure: disable automatic selection of NaN boxing
on 64 bit platforms, for now.
Add test whether -Wno-strict-aliasing is supported by
the compiler, performed only if NaN boxing is enabled.
We need to disable this warning because it goes off on
the code that reinterprets an integer as a double and
vice versa.

* buf.c (buf_compress): Let's use the level value of -1
if not specified, so Zlib defaults it to 6, or whatever.

* txr.1: Note that -1 is a valid level value and that
is the default.

The use of -ansi doesn't by itself diagnose instances of some
constructs we don't want in the project, like mixed
declarations and statements.
* configure (diag_flags): Add -Werror=declaration-after-statement.
This is C only, so filter it out for C++.
Also add -Werror=vla.
* HACKING: Update inaccurate statements about what dialect we
are using. TXR isn't pure C90: some GCC extensions are used.
We even use long long if the configure script detects it as
working, and some C99 library features.
* buf.c (replace_buf, buf_list): Fix by reordering.
* eval.c (op_dohash, op_load_time_lit): Fix by reordering.
* ffi.c (ffi_simple_release): Fix by reordering.
(align_sw_get): Fix empty macro to expand to dummy declaration
so a semicolon after it isn't interpreted as a statement.
On platforms with alignment, remove a semicolon from the macro
so that it requires one.
(ffi_i8_put, ffi_u8_put): Fix by reordering.
* gc.c (gc_init): Fix with extra braces.
* hash.c (hash_init): Fix by reordering.
* lib.c (list_collect_revappend, sub_iter, replace_str,
replace_vec, mapcar_listout, mappend, mapdo, window_map_list,
subst): Fix by reordering.
(gensym, find, rfind, pos, rpos, in, search_common): Fix by
renaming optional argument and using declaration instead of
assignment.
* linenoise/linenoise.c (edit_in_editor): Fix by reordering.
* parser.c (is_balanced_line): Fix by reordering.
* regex.c (nfa_count_one, print_rec): Fix by reordering.
* signal.c (sig_mask): Fix by reordering.
* stream.c (get_string): Fix by renaming optional argument and
using declaration instead of assignment.
* struct.c (lookup_static_slot_desc): Fix by turning mutated
variable into block local.
(umethod_args_fun): Fix by reordering.
(get_special_slot): Fix by new scope via braces.
* sysif.c (usleep_wrap): Fix by new scope via braces.
(setrlimit_wrap): Fix by new scope via braces.
* time.c (time_string_meth, time_parse_meth): Fix by reordering.
* tree.c (tr_do_delete_spec): Fix by new scope via braces.
* unwind.h (uw_block_beg): New macro which doesn't define
RESULTVAR but expects it to refers to an existing one.
(uw_block_begin): Replace do while (0) with enum trick
so that we have a declaration that requires a semicolon,
rather than a statement, allowing declarations to follow.
(uw_match_env_begin): Now opens a scope and features the
same enum trick as in uw_block_begin.
This fixes a declaration-follows-statement issue in
the v_output function in match.c.
(uw_match_env_end): Closes scope opened by uw_match_env_begin.
* unwind.c (revive_cont): Fix by introducing variable, and
using new uw_block_beg macro.
* vm.c (vm_execute_closure): Fix using combination of local
variable and reordering.

This is a big commit motivated by the need to clean up the
situation with built-in type symbols, COBJ objects and
structs.
The struct type system allows struct types to be defined
for symbols like regex or str, which are used by built-in
or cobj types. This is a bad thing.
What is worse, structure instances are COBJ types which
identify their type using the COBJ class symbol mechanism.
There are places in the C implementation which assume
that when a COBJ has a certain class symbol, it is of
a certain expected type, which is totally different from
and incompatible form a struct instance. User code can
define a structure object which will fool that code.
There are multiple things going on in this patch.
The major theme is that the COBJ representation is changing.
Instead of a class symbol, COBJ instances now carry a
"struct cobj_class *" pointer. This pointer is obtained
by registration via the cobj_register function. All modules
must register their class symbols to obtain these class
handles, which are then used in cobj() calls for
instantiation.
The CPTR type was identical to COBJ until now, except for the
type tag. This is changing; CPTR objects will keep the old
representation with the class symbol.

It's incorrect to use a borrowed buf, because a borrowed buf
assumes that the memory isn't dynamically allocated, and will
not free it when it is finalized by the garbage collector.
The buffer which holds the hash returned by sha256 and md5
does in fact own the memory.
* buf.c (make_owned_buf): Static function becomes external.

* buf.c (int_buf, uint_buf): Refer to the buffer length b->len
rather than the underlying allocation size b->size.
Referring to b->size will not only produce the wrong value
when it is larger than len, but b->size can be null for a
borrowed buffer, producing a crash.
* tests/012/buf.tl: Tests.

The c_num and c_unum functions now take a self argument for
identifying the calling function. This requires changes in a
large number of places.
In a few places, additional functions acquire a self
argument. The ffi module has the most extensive example of
this.
Some functions mention their name in a larger string, or have
scattered literals giving their name; with the introduction of
the self local variable, these are replaced by references to
self.
In the following changelog, the notation TS stands for "take
self argument", meaning that the functions acquires a new "val
self" argument. The notation DS means "define self": the functions
in question defines a self variable, which they pass down.
The notation PS means that the functions pass down an existing
self variable to functions that now require it.

* buf.c (buf_grow): Function removed; logic merged into
buf_do_set_len. The bug fixed is that buf_grow was
initializing just the newly allocated bytes to init_val. The
bytes that must actually be initialized are those which lie
between the old and new length, not in the allocated area.
(make_buf): In make_buf, we don't have to initialize the
entire buffer, but only bytes 0 through len - 1. Now
calloc is only used when the initializing value is zero,
and the buffer's allocation size is the same as the length.
When the length is increase to protrude into the allocated
uninitialized area, buf_do_set_len will now properly
initialize that to the value given at that time.
* txr.1: Update make-buf documentation not to say that
all the bytes of the buffer are initialized.

This slight inefficiency occurs in some 37 places in the code.
In most places we replace lt(x, zero) with minusp(x).
In a few places, !plusp(x) is used and surrounding logic is

lt(x, zero) ? t : nil is replaced with just minusp(x).

VM machine code is endian-specific: it consists of 32 bit
instruction words which are 32 bit in the local byte order.
Thus code assembled on a little-endian machine won't run
on a big endian-machine, or vice versa: unless we identify
the situation and byte-swap the code when we load it.
* buf.c (buf_swap32): New function.
* buf.h (buf_swap32): Declared.
* parser.c (read_file_common): Decode the third element from
the version: a Boolean indicating big endian, if true.
If the object file's endian is opposite from our endian, then
byte swap the code.
* itypes.c (itypes_init): Oops, calculation of
itypes_little_endian was broken due to classic C =/== typo.
Luckily, nothing has used this flag so far; it's been waiting
for this first use. I caught this due to testing on a PPC64
box.
* share/txr/stdlib/compiler.tl (%big-endian%, %tlo-ver%): New
variables.
(usr:compile-file): The file version comes from %tlo-ver% now,
which includes the big-endian flag.
